The District Boxers Association arranged 4 special vans, sports equipment and other items for the Thoothukudi district boys and girls who will participate in the state boxing tournament to be held in Namakkal from Sept. 1 to 4. More than 60 students from Thoothukudi district are participating in the competition organized by the School Education Department. In this regard, a consultation meeting with the players and coaches was held at a private restaurant in Thoothukudi under the chairmanship of Abhishek Ponseelan. At that time, activities including improving the sport of boxing in the Thoothukudi district, developing new players, and adding new members to the association were discussed.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s MLA, GV Markandayan, was arrested on Monday after a complaint alleged that he made defamatory and threatening remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during a recent public meeting. Markandayan, a three-time MLA, was taken into custody by police from his residence in Thoothukudi district, triggering protests by his supporters, who raised slogans against the police action. He was later formally arrested.

THOOTHUKUDI: Container trailer owners in Thoothukudi launched an indefinite strike on Thursday, threatening to disrupt export-import operations through the VOC Port as they pressed for a revised freight agreement and improved cargo handling. The strike has been called by the Thoothukudi District Container Lorry Owners’ Association, which is demanding that the Thoothukudi Customs Brokers’ Association execute a written freight agreement providing revised hiring charges.

THOOTHUKUDI: Farmers dependent on the Korampallam tank located near Thoothukudi town alleged silt and karambai (fertile silt) removed from it were not being supplied to farmers, but they were being sold by dredgers to realtors at a huge price.   Farmers say the district administration has permitted the removal of silt deposits from the tank so as to increase its storage capacity. The government has permitted farmers to take them freely as silt and karambai sands are good for agriculture.  A banana farmer, M Rathnapandi of Vadaku Kalangarai village, said that he had applied for taking karambai sand to fill up his agricultural land two months ago. “Water from the Korampallam tank seeps into my low-lying land, which is close to the tank, thus spoiling crops as it cannot be drained. However, the operators don’t give the sand. They charge more than `1,000 per load, and I can not afford it,” he said. “Those who excavate the silt sell it to the realtors,

CHENNAI: The TVK govt on Monday announced a Rs 20,800-crore project to establish a 1,600MW new supercritical thermal power station in Tuticorin, along with a Rs 33,066-crore plan to overhaul Tamil Nadu’s power transmission network.Making the announcements under Rule 110 in the Assembly, chief minister C Joseph Vijay said the state needed world-class power infrastructure to meet its growing economy and rising electricity demand.The proposed Tuticorin project will comprise two 800MW units and will be implemented under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday announced a Rs 20,000-crore energy and infrastructure package, including a new 1,200 MW supercritical thermal power plant in Thoothukudi, along with measures to strengthen power transmission and tackle outages in Chennai. Making the announcements in the state Assembly, the 52-year-old actor-politician said the thermal power project would be developed through a public-private partnership and would comprise two units with a combined capacity of 1,200 MW.
